I've been waiting to express my thoughts on the news about WotC potentially killing the golden goose that is D&D. Personally I feel that D&D's surge in popularity over the last two decades created an environment ripe for opportunists and exploitation that wasn't sustainable and brought all kinds of unsavory characters into the tabletop roleplaying space. But that's a rant for another day.
So what does the new OGL mean for Gundam 5e?
Honestly? I don't know. I won't speculate or pretend to be some amateur legal scholar or seek out loopholes. There's a lot of conflicting information out there about whether the leaked OGL is even going to be official let alone how it affects homebrew content.
When I started making the initial ruleset for Gundam 5e over 6 years ago, I was just trying to make a role playing game set in the franchise I adore so much that wasn't as tedious to learn as Mekton Zeta. When I started on YouTube documenting my progress I went in with the goal of helping others take gaming into their own hands; whether that means homebrewing tabletop games, video game development, or creating tools and resources like minis, 3d models, and dynamic web apps to play their own games.
That goal hasn't changed. I am committed to sharing all that I do in my various hobbies so you can feel confident to seize your own gaming destiny rather than wait for someone else to do it for you.
The main thing is that nothing short of a C&D letter from Sunrise, Bandai, or WotC will make me take down the website. All of the content and resources I've created and will create going forward will continue to be available for free, my Discord will not have a paywall to join (although Patrons get access to an exclusive chat). Unless I am threatened with legal action, I'll keep creating Gundam 5e stuff for you guys as well as sharing the process and source code so that you can do the same for other IP or just expand on what I've done.
I will say that this newly strengthens my resolve to commit more effort toward a wholly original tabletop property using my own IP that I can share with you all, free from the vicissitudes of third parties. I have a universe built out with thousands of years of lore, a rough story outline, new tabletop pen & paper RPG rules (that aren't d20 based), and a Unity3D video game demo in the works. If you like space operas, mecha, fantasy, and adventure, I promise you'll enjoy what I've been cooking up.
It's been a wild ride so far and I think regardless of what the OGL means for G5e, we're not done yet!
